From Stigma to Strength: Advocating Menstrual Health and Reproductive Rights
On a sunny Friday in May 2023, Lending Hands Initiative, in collaboration with Soulevement, Peperusha BINTI, and @EqualVoicesSiaya, gathered at Majiwa Primary School for a powerful event aimed at creating lasting impact. The day was dedicated to addressing key issues affecting the youth, such as peer pressure, gender-based violence (GBV), sexual reproductive health, and menstrual hygiene management. These topics, often shrouded in stigma and silence, were brought to the forefront in an effort to empower young people with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate these challenges.
With engaging talks, the event aimed to demystify conversations around menstruation and sexual health, fostering a culture where these subjects are openly discussed. Menstrual hygiene management was a major highlight, in line with the global campaign to make menstruation a normal fact of life by 2030. Young girls were provided with the education and resources necessary to manage their menstrual health with dignity, while boys were also included in the conversation to promote understanding and support.
This transformative day was made possible by the unwavering support of the community. From those who participated in the fundraising activities, such as the hike and potluck, to individuals and organizations who contributed donations, every effort counted. Your contributions not only helped organize the event but also demonstrated the power of collective action in addressing societal issues.
As we continue our journey towards normalizing menstruation and advocating for youth empowerment, Lending Hands Initiative extends its deepest gratitude to everyone involved. Your participation and generosity have paved the way for a brighter, healthier future for the students of Majiwa Primary School and beyond.
Together, we are breaking barriers, challenging taboos, and making menstruation a normal fact by 2030.
